WATER GELLANT BREAKERS |
|---|
| INTRODUCTION
Once a fracturing fluid has effectively created a hydraulic fracture and transported a proppant into it, it must break (de-viscosify) to permit fast and complete flow-back (fluid return). Selection of the proper water gellant breaker is important as they react differently, and respond at different temperatures. Messina Þoffers a complete line of enzyme, oxidizer, acid, and specially blended breakers to cover all types Þof hydraulic fracturing applications for all well conditions. |

Liquid or powdered enzyme breaker for starch polymer fluid systems. OILAID-WB-11 is useful in breaking drilling and completion fluids prepared with starch products, and in cleaning filter cakes from formation faces deposited by these fluids. It is most effective from ambient temperature to 70°C (158°F) at a fluid pH range of 6.0 to 7.0, however, it has been used at higher temperatures. Although the rate of starch breakdown is accelerated at these elevated temperatures, the enzyme also breaks down rapidly above 70°C. A typical loading for the powdered version of OILAID-WB-11 is 0.1% based on a dry starch content basis. When the liquid version is used, the recommended loading is 0.357% on a dry starch basis. These loadings will vary with temperature, application, etc. It is recommended that pilot tests be conducted to determine the optimum loading in the field. Product Data Sheet |
Select liquid enzyme breaker for starch polymers used in high temperature applications. OILAID-WB-12 hydrolyzes (breaks) the viscosity of the starch slurries, and degrades the filter cakes of colloidal starch. OILAID-WB-12 is useful in breaking drilling and completion fluids prepared with starch products, and in cleaning filter cakes from formation faces deposited by these fluids. It is most effective between pH of 6.0-7.0, with pH of 6.0 being the optimum pH at 60°C. As the temperature rises from that point, the optimum pH shifts towards 7.0. OILAID-WB-12 is not effective at a pH below 5.0. The optimum temperature range for OILAID-WB-12 is ambient to 90°C (194°F), which is substantially higher than other enzyme products available. Due to the critical nature of enzyme breaker systems, lab pilot testing is mandatory to determine the actual field break time. Product Data Sheet |
Enzyme breaker for cellulosic and polysaccharide derivative polymer fluid systems at low temperatures. OILAID-WB-20 is effective at providing a complete fracturing fluid breakdown to temperatures up to 150° F. Temperatures above this point will de-nature the enzyme and the gellant will not be broken. OILAID-WB-20 can lose activity over a period of time, therefore, it is necessary for the product to be tested periodically to check its activity. Typical loadings range from 0.05 to 5.0 lbs/1000 gallons of frac fluid. The exact loading can only be determined by laboratory pilot testing utilizing the complete fluid system at the appropriate temperature. Product Data Sheet |
Powdered oxidizer breaker for use in aqueous gelled fluid systems to reduce the viscosity of the fluid after application. OILAID-WB-30 is added on-the-fly to aqueous frac fluids as they are pumped into a well. Break time can be varied with the dosage of the breaker, temperature of the fluid, and gellant concentration. For more precise control of break schedules, OILAID-WB-30 sometimes is dissolved in freshwater and the resulting solution is carefully metered into the frac fluid. OILAID-WB-30 is applicable to 180°F (82°C). Typical loadings range from 0.1 to 0.5-lb/1000 gal of frac fluid. As with other breaker/gellant systems, it is mandatory that lab pilot tests be conducted to determine the optimum breaker loading for a particular fluid system. |
Liquid or powder oxidizer for use in water based fracturing fluids at intermediate temperatures (150°-225°F). OILAID-WB-35 will provide a complete viscosity breakdown to ensure excellent fluid recovery after application. It is usually added at the blender tub and can be applied either in powder form or diluted in freshwater, and the resulting solution is monitored as it is added the the fracturing fluid system. It is recommended for continuous application as the frac fluid is being pumped downhole. Care must be taken not to overtreat, as this will cause premature gel breakdown. If an insufficient amount of OILAID-WB-35 is used, non-uniform breakdown in the frac fluid will occur. This may result in restricted flow-back and possibly erratic propagation in the fracture. Loadings are best determined by laboratory pilot testing prior to use in the field. Product Data Sheet |
Powdered, organic acid-based breaker compound for water based stimulation fluids in low temperature wells. OILAID-WB-50 will provide a complete viscosity breakdown on the gelled system in the 50- 100°F temperature range to the viscosity of water. Temperatures in excess of 100°F may cause premature breaktimes. In addition, further control of break time may be achieved by incorporating OILAID-BG-20 into the frac fluid system (refer to OILAID-BG-9 section). OILAID-WB-50 is not effective in crosslinked fluids. Typical loading for this product is 1 lb/1000 gal of frac fluid. If this produces inadequate break times, the loading may be altered for the particular application. Product Data Sheet |
