BUFFERS

INTRODUCTION

Buffers are used to regulate the pH of mix waters used to prepare drilling muds, completion fluids, injection fluids, fracturing fluids, etc. Controlling the pH allows the operator to regulate 1) the rate and degree of hydrolysis for polymer solutions, 2) time and temperature stability of solutions, 3) extent of damage to pH-sensitive formations, etc.

OILAID-BG-9

Crystalline organic acid used to adjust pH of aqueous fracturing fluids into a proper pH range for optimum use of a polysaccharide polymer. OILAID-BG-9 is added to the fracturing fluid after the polymer to properly disperse the polymer and to speed up the hydration rate of the polymer. However, it is important not to add the OILAID-BG-9 to the water before the polymer to avoid lumping in the frac tank. Optimum concentration 2.5 lb/1000 gal.

Product Data Sheet

OILAID-BG-10

Powdered buffer used to adjust the pH range of fracturing fluid to the 4.5 to 5.5 range. May be used in 1% KCl, API brine (8% NaCl and 2% CaCl2) and most other field waters. OILAID-BG-10 is not affected by up to 200 ppm dissolved iron, 1% sulfide, tannins, bicarbonates or magnesium. OILAID-BG-10 is incompatible with HPG polymers. For waters in the pH range of 4 to 8, typically load 3 to 5 lb of buffer per 1000 gal on fracturing fluid. For waters outside this range, up to 10 lbs/1000 gal may be used.

OILAID-BG-20

A powdered buffer used in conjunction with selected breakers when moderation of break times for selected high viscosity gellants is desired. The recommended loading for OILAID-BG-20 is 1 lb per 100 gal on gelled fluid. Higher concentrations will not appreciably increase the working time. It is also recommended that exact loadings of all additives and relevant temperatures be used to determine exact break times. OILAID-BG-20 is also used as a buffer in Messina's THERMA-FRAC system.

OILAID-BG-30

A very effective powdered buffer. Recommended buffer for Messina's water gellant line. OILAID-BG-30 is a low pH buffer which is incompatible with HPG polymers. OILAID-BG-30 will moderate the initial gel time and time to full viscosity of most types of gelling agents. The recommended loading range is from 0.25 to 2 lb/1000 gal on gellant fluid. It is also recommended that exact concentrations of all additives and relevant temperatures be used to determine exact break times.

OILAID-BG-32

Powdered buffer for high (8 to 12) pH control. OILAID-BG-32 is used for high-temp fracturing applications with crosslinked gels. It is HPG compatible. Loadings will vary from 2.5 to 10.0 lb/1000 gal of fracturing fluid.

OILAID-BG-34

Powdered, specialty buffer for THERMA-FRAC system. OILAID-BG- 34 will moderate the breaktime of high viscosity gelling agents by OILAID-WB-50. OILAID-BG-34 is not compatible with OILAID-WG-41 or 49. Typically loaded at 1 lb/1000 gallons of treating fluid.
