SHALE STABILIZERS |

| INTRODUCTION
These products control hydration, sloughing, and heaving of shale and claystones to maximize the efficiency of the drilling operations and avoid hole instability. Some of these products (BORE-TROL, MAXI-TROL-S, MICRO-SEAL, THERMO-SEAL) work by coating shales electrostatically with a tough asphaltic resin film, and in some cases by chemical interaction as well (BORE-TROL). REDI-COAT, REDI-COAT-PLUS, and POLYTROL-1000 are are long chain highly anionic polymeric encapsulators which coat cuttings and the well bore with a polymer film which retards wetting, hydration and disintegration. The REDI-COAT products also have other functions (such a viscosifying agents, bentonite extenders, etc.) which make them valuable primary system components. |

A high molecular weight specially produced partially hydrolized polyacrylamide polymer (PHPA). Functions as a primary vicosifying agent but also as an important shale and bore-hole stabilizer/encapsulator, bentonite extender and, flocculation agent for clear water drilling due to its highly anionic nature.
